International Institute of Municipal Clerks

Founded in 1947, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) is the leading professional association serving the needs of Municipal Clerks, Secretaries, Treasurers and Recorders and other allied associations form cities and towns worldwide.

IIMC's primary goal is to actively promote the continuing education and professional development of Municipal Clerks through extensive education programs, certification, publications, networking, annual conferences and research.  As an educational catalyst, IIMC inspires clerks to expand and advance beyond their present levels of development.

IIMC also engages in municipal research administration, enhances critical professional skill development, and fosters a spirit of mutual assistance and good fellowship among Municipal Clerks around the globe.

Its 14,000 plus members represent municipalities with populations ranging from 250 to more than 10 million people in North America and 13 other countries.

Diverse perspectives in IIMC Membership and Leadership are critical to the Organization’s ongoing success. IIMC views its members’ diverse backgrounds and interests as assets and is committed to promoting inclusive environments where members from across the Municipal Clerk profession feel valued, respected and welcomed. IIMC does not discriminate based on profession, race, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, appearance, geographic location or professional level. IIMC is committed to having Board members that are representative of the diverse make-up of its membership. IIMC is governed by a 26-member Board of Directors with 22 Directors from IIMC's 11 regions.

There are two certificate programs that a Town Clerk can endeavor to achieve through the International Institution of Municipal Clerks. Designations received on completion are the Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) and Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) Titles.

It is the intent of such programs to promote the continued education of Municipal Clerks to enable clerks to better serve their boards and communities. Technology and rapid social change continually impact local government operations, requiring informed and professional public managers. Programs such as the above help Municipal Clerks understand change, learn skills required in the information age, and perform as competent professionals. In some jurisdictions, designations have become a prerequisite for employment.

The Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation is granted only after three years of specialized schooling and extensive experience. This recognition does not come lightly and is highly respected within the industry.

As modern day Municipal Clerks, the responsibilities are endless. Jurisdiction falls under numerous areas as the Town Clerk is the official filing officer, custodian of all Town records, Clerk of the Town Board, licensing issuing officer of the Town, is involved with fiscal affairs and has many Election duties. In the ever changing climate of Town Government, with its sphere of influence always increasing, constant education and updating is needed on the part of the Municipal Clerk in order to fully service the everyday needs of a Town's constituents.
